Standard Interrogation Techniques: Five Questions for Mass Worship (Interview)

Although I’d ideally love to be able to conduct hard-hitting, in-depth interviews, who has the time these days? In lieu of this, I’ve thrown together the below question template, hopefully to gather some interesting and informative results, without taking up too much of anyone’s time.

Introduce yourself – who are you and what do you do?

I’m Fred, I play drums in and write, record and mix the stuff we do with our band Mass Worship.

Tell us about your latest release and why people should listen to your music

Our latest album is called Portal Tombs. It’s an exploration of the darker sides of life, the search for meaning in a seemingly meaningless existence, and an attempt to use music as a means of communication to evoke the darker, deeply suppressed emotions hidden under the skin of the modern human being. If you’re into existentialism, heavy and dark metal with a touch of melancholy – Mass Worship might be your thing.

What’s the most important thing to you about your music? What meaning does it give you and what purpose does it serve in your life?

To use music as a medium of communication, try to communicate the emotional state inside of me, and hopefully evoke the same emotional response in others around the world who might feel like we’re currently living in strange, hopeless times. Music gives me the ability to try to express feelings and ideas that might be hard to convey through traditional language.

Tell us a lesser-known interesting or funny anecdote about your band or music

Iggy Pop is a fan of Mass Worship!

Finally, what are you listening to at the moment that you especially enjoy and wish more people knew about?

I’m really into Scott Walker as of lately, especially the albums Scott 3 and 4. There’s a sort of emotional ambiguity in his music that really attracts me, and I’m always on the look out for stuff like that. Also just found out about the band Unto Others, been spinning that quite a lot lately.
